Every year in September, the
Société historique de la Saskatchewan invites you to join us for this annual event which, by means of historical theatre and demonstrations of old times skills and craft works, we hope will inspire new interest in Francophone history in Saskatchewan. Public attendance for Journées du patrimoine/Heritage Days is approximately 850 people, and is made possible by the help of about 100 volunteers.
Journées du patrimoine/ Heritage Days was conceived in 2005 as a part of Saskatchewan's centennial celebrations. The activities are all based around a common theme and may proceed in either French or English.
For the past four years, the
Société historique de la Saskatchewan has worked towards the development of a new and dynamic historical animation program, of which Journées du patrimoine/Heritage Days has been a key event. The
Société has worked particularly to engaged the interest of Saskatchewan's French population and the general public.
Our target audience is comprised of students and teachers in Fransaskois schools and French immersion schools as well as the general Francophone and Francophile populace. Since the conception of Journées du patrimoine/Heritage Days, we have expanded our demographic to also include the Anglophone public. Since 2007, English school students and teachers have been invited to participate in this interactive historical journey.
In an effort to encourage student participation in Journées du patrimoine/Heritage Days we began production of a Teacher's Guide («L'histoire fransaskoise à portée de la main») in 2006 and have continued to produce one annually. This guide is only available in French.
The guide is distributed to schools concurrent with back-to-school. It contains historical information and activities inspired by the skits and demonstrations presented during Heritage Days. The guide may also be used as a reference tool for Social Sciences courses or Saskatchewan history projects.
Journées du patrimoine/Heritage Days are on a Friday and Saturday of the third week of September. The first day is reserved for schools and the second day is directed towards the general public. The schedule of events for Friday and Saturday is the same.
Journées du patrimoine/Heritage Days alternates annually between northern and southern locations. The host cities are chosen according to their pertenance to our chosen themes.
